Broadband Internet access in Croatia
The Croatian Government passed in 2006 the Strategy for the development of broadband Internet access in the Republic of Croatia until 2008 aiming to accelerate and incite further development of broadband Internet access as one of basic foundations for establishing the society of knowledge and for joining Croatia with other Europe's developed countries.
 
Following dedication to the principles of the knowledge society, free economy, and active policy for EU accession, the Croatian Government has strategically committed itself to balanced and clear, prodevelopment policy, to be sustainably implemented by state government bodies, regulatory bodies and other institution within their competence, through permanent monitoring of information society development and its technological infrastructure in the European Union, and alignment of the national legislation and regulations to these trends. Thereby, all state government bodies and other authorities, particularly regulatory body competent for electronic communications, the Croatian Post and Electronic Communications Agency, are obliged to act according to the principle of minimum, still efficient and responsible integration into the free market trends, to promote and assist in equal development of broadband internet access, by efficiently implementing principles to reduce the digital gap in Croatia, as well as the digital gap between Croatia and EU Member States.
 
Considering that the existing Strategy has foreseen activities to be carried out by the end of 2008, the Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure has already commenced with the drafting of the new strategy for the development of broadband Internet access.
 
Preparation of the new Strategy
 
The goal of drafting the new Strategy is to accelerate the creation of the information society, to continue positive progress of broadband access development which has been achieved so far and to provide constructive proposal for further improvement of the quality and quantity together with enhanced activities for removal of detected shortcomings.
 
The Strategy will additionally serve for the purpose to assist regional and local communities in their making and correction of own strategic development plans. It is necessary to reduce the slow progress of certain regions (counties) are regards the density in the number of users by special additional engagements, as soon as and as much as possible. In that manner, basic preconditions for intensive inclusion into wider European regions in accordance with EU initiative will be created. 
 
The Strategy will directly incite processes leading to fast informing of all citizens, and entities in regional and local communities, particularly their management on benefits of the information society development.In that manner would common development framework as the base for the unique project with a number of subprojects requiring cautious coordination and alignment, be used.
 
Together with the afore mentioned, the Strategy will serve as the base for drafting professional studies prior to the drafting of the implementation documentation.
